Thereโs a feeling of belonging when I walk into a room of like-minded creatives thatโs
hard to explain to most Muggles. In that environment I can fully be myself, and magic can be created without the scrutiny of non-magical folks.
I walked into the living room of the large house weโd rented for our annual gathering of the Bumbershoots Writers Society. I exchanged heartfelt hugs and handshakes with my fellow members, because itโs been a while since weโve seen each other.
As I typed, I engaged in conversations with each member, as well as whatever topic the group was discussing. I talked with Gil Miller about my recording of his novel โAnimal Sacrifice,โ and gave examples of the different voices Iโm using. JC Crumpton, Venessa McDaniel Cerasale, and I planned the release of โGauntlets and Conches, Volume Two; Nemesis,โ and Cyndy Prasse Miller discussed blogs, calendars, and conferences. The
creative juices flowed copiously.
After the greetings were over, I glanced around the room. In front of everyoneโs seat there was an open laptop. I sensed the electricity flowing through the atmosphere and I
pulled out my trusty portable with the Iron Man stickers. I found a space and fell into the rhythm of the moment.
This is what happens when Iโm amongst my tribe. Two members were not in attendance due to airline malfeasance, but when we had our virtual meeting, Carol Bloomgarden and Gordon Bonnet gave their input and contributed new ideas and goals. Our gathering was successful and new innovations were launched.
I always lament our parting because when I get back home, I donโt have a creative crew to bounce ideas back and forth with. Antwan โTwizzleโ Taylor and me vibe a bit, but thatโs just the two of us, and we are both extremely busy.
I think the days and weeks between tribal gatherings will be fruitful, but to be in the room with the Bumbershoots crew gives food to my creative soul. Iโll keep my fingers crossed our pow-wows will be more frequent. Peace.
